Tuesday: 100 Words on Smell
Nov. 27th, 2018 12:09 amHi! I’m
brumeier, and this week we’re going to be filling themes based on the five senses using 100 words or any multiple of 100. Today’s theme is SMELL, anything and everything related to the sense of smell (favorite scents, encounter with a skunk, scented candles)!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Stargate Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, what the smell of coffee evokes
+ Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, a particular scent is what breaks the case
+ Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams, the smells of home
+ Any, any m/m, “I smell the smell of something smelly.”
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2018-11-28 04:08 am (UTC)John hadn’t thought he knew coffee that well. For him, coffee had always been Rodney. But then Rodney was gone and Atlantis was gone and the SGC was full of coffee but none of it was Rodney’s.
Intelligentsia, it was called. Had an almost chocolate-y scent, since Rodney loved chocolate. John had spent an embarrassing amount of time at a fancy coffee place sampling brews till he found it. He could never quite brew it like Rodney took it. Maybe the coffee machines on Atlantis were different.
He was in his office - and there it was. Intelligentsia, just the way Rodney brewed it.
John looked up, heart pounding.
Lorne stood in the doorway. “Brought you something, sir,” he said, and held out a mug of coffee.
Disappointment curled through John.
And then Rodney snatched the coffee from Lorne and stepped into the office. “John,” he said.
John said, without thinking, “I missed you.”
Lorne ducked out, closed the door behind him.
John said, “Give me a taste of your coffee.”
It smelled delicious.
It tasted better on Rodney’s lips.

“Apart from the broken crockery, upset furniture and dead body?”
“Those I’d expect from what Lestrade told me. No, there’s something else.”
Sherlock surveyed the room and sniffed loudly.
“Have you got a cold?” John asked.
“No. Can’t you smell it?”
John sniffed rather less obviously than Sherlock. “Now you mention it there is something.”
“it’s pollen. But there’s no sign of any flowers. There should be a bouquet somewhere. Find whoever delivered the flowers and there’s your killer.”
“Ah, Mr Bud the Florist.”

Date: 2018-11-27 06:10 pm (UTC)“Dr. Ven made it for me,” Rodney said distractedly as he adjusted a line of code. “It’s supposed to help me with caffeine cravings. I told her I’m trying to cut back.”
“On coffee?”
Rodney favored John with a dark look. “Have you ever seen me drink anything else, Sheppard?”
John set the candle back, looking discomfited. “Why the sudden need to cut back on coffee?”
“Blood pressure’s too high.” Rodney’s attention was already back on his screen. “Carson said I had to made ‘significant changes’ to my coffee consumption, and Dr. Ven said that the right intensity of scent could trick my brain into thinking I’m having caffeine without the negative effects. New age hocus-pocus, if you ask me, but I like the way it smells.”
“You’re okay, though?” John asked.
Rodney studied John’s face, and the way he was rubbing the back of his neck, and rolled his eyes. “This won’t affect our sex life, Sheppard.”
“Good. That’s good.” John leaned in and gave Rodney a quick kiss.
Rodney got back to work, grinning.

Date: 2018-11-27 02:55 pm (UTC)Fill (500): MCU, Steve Rogers + Bucky Barnes
Date: 2018-11-27 08:46 pm (UTC)But the smell in the air, drifting into the bedroom from the kitchen, that was familiar on a deep, visceral level: pork fat, sage, real butter. He didn’t know the name for it but his stomach grumbled noisily and his mouth filled with saliva.
Before he followed the smell back to its source, Bucky ducked into the bathroom to brush his teeth and empty his bladder. As always, he took a long minute to stare at himself in the mirror, refamiliarizing himself with his own face.
James Buchanan Barnes, he reminded himself. You deserve to be here.
Steve was in the kitchen wearing nothing but boxer briefs and a Captain America apron, the latter a gag gift from Tony. He was frying something on the stove, the snap and sizzle only making Bucky hungrier.
“Hey, sleepyhead,” Steve said with a grin. His hair was still tousled from bed. “Just in time for breakfast.”
“What is it?” Bucky asked, looking over Steve’s shoulder. Whatever he was frying was roughly rectangular and dark brown in color.
“Scrapple.” Steve turned off the burner and slid the oddly-named meat onto plates already full of scrambled eggs and toast. “Don’t ask what’s in it.”
He carried the plates to the kitchen table, where juice had already been poured out into two glasses. Bucky followed, suddenly overwhelmingly hungry, as if he hadn’t eaten in days. He tentatively tried the scrapple first, since he was familiar enough with the eggs.
“Oh!” he said in surprise. “I remember this! My mom used to make it every Saturday.”
Steve grinned back at him, always pleased when Bucky accessed another memory of his past. “Everything but the oink, that’s what your dad used to say.”
Bucky nodded, shoveling another bite into his mouth. It didn’t taste exactly the same – nothing did these days – but it was pretty close. It was low-class food, pork scraps mixed with cornmeal and spices to make a kind of loaf. Meat had been scarce when he was a kid, so he’d really looked forward to the scrapple every Saturday.
“You can buy it pre-made these days,” Steve said. “No trips to the butcher. It’s not as good as your mom’s, though.”
“This is great! Thank you!”
Steve ended up frying the rest of the scrapple he’d bought, Bucky eating most of it. With that flavor in his mouth and that scent in his nose he could almost remember what it was like, sitting in his mother’s kitchen with his sister and his father.
“Can we have this every Saturday?” Bucky asked, almost embarrassed to ask.
“Whenever you want, Buck,” Steve replied. “Whenever you want.”

Date: 2018-11-27 02:56 pm (UTC)Fill: Bicker - A-Team
Date: 2018-11-28 03:37 am (UTC)Face rolled his eyes and shook his head, "You love the smell of any Incendiary device, Murdock."
"I do not. Kerosene gives me a headache. I do not like having a headache," he defended.
Baracus shook his head as he tightened the bolt he had been working on. "You know this fool loves explosives. The bigger the boom, the more he loves it."
"B.A. knows the way to my heart. Proof we were meant to be. Please, say you will the napalm to my heart," Murdock cooed as he made a kissy face.
"Keep talking like that and I will hurt you. Got it? Hannibal, you keep this lunatic away from me," he threatened.
"I am a colonel, not a referee. You gentleman settle your argument like men and leave me out of it," the older man said as he lit his cigar and sat back to watch the show.
Honestly, he would trust his life to each of these men, but he wouldn't trust them with his sanity. Plus, they were always good for a laugh.

“The scent just hit me. The day she died, she made them for us. Jeannie and I were in the den, and she brought them to us, and then she went upstairs, and she never came back.”
Evan immediately set the plate aside. “I’m sorry, Carson asked for -”
“You couldn’t have known; I’m not mad,” Rodney said. “I haven’t thought of her in a long time. She was kind to me. Thank you for reminding me of her.”

Date: 2018-12-09 12:01 am (UTC)Bucky at the bathroom sink, splashing the best aftershave he could afford on freshly-smooth cheeks as he lectured Steve on the right way to woo the ladies.
If only he’d known that Steve was more interested in how to attract Bucky.
A smile played over Steve’s lips, even though his heart ached knowing that he would never see Bucky again.
His best friend, who could make even the cheapest aftershave smell like heaven.
The guy on the subway? Not so much.

“It’s this.”
“Reminds me of Christmas at the bakery.”
“Oh? Then it must bring back good memories.”
The memories Harry had were of long days sweating over hot ovens as they churned out batch after batch of sugar cookies. The smell of butter constantly assaulting his nostrils, flour perpetually under his fingernails and on his clothes. Sugar so thick in the air, it made his teeth feel gritty. After weeks of Christmas baking, Harry didn’t even want to look at sweets until Easter.
Harry smiled at Zayn.
“Sure.”

“Love potion. Very appropriate for a Valentine’s Day party.”
“What?!” Draco sputtered. “As if, Lovegood! In your looney dreams!”
“I like you fine without any use of magic, though.”
Before Draco could protest further, Luna leaned in and kissed his cheek.
“I’m happy to be your Valentine.” Luna put the punch aside and wandered away on light feet.
Draco scrunched up his face in disgust, but his heart was beating faster than ever.

“I was worried,” Motoki sighs, pulling his boyfriend into his arms.. “Why do you smell like roses?” He noses into Mamoru's collar, seeking more of the sweet scent.
“This might explain it.” Mamoru pulls a crimson flower from inside his jacket.
Motoki stares. “You just happen to have that on you?”
Mamoru grins impishly and fourishes the rose. “Never know when I might run into a cute, amazingly patient boy who deserves it.”
Flushing, Motoki goes to find a vase, any slight already forgiven.
