Living Memory, Peeta/Katniss

Date: 2012-04-05 10:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dannysgirlsg1.livejournal.com
Peeta’s heart nearly stops the first time he sees her on that first day of school. Red plaid dress, two braids instead of one… He can hear his father’s words washing over him, a coal miner’s daughter…

“Papa!”

He blinks, brought back to the present by the call of excitement. The little girl, with her red plaid dress and two braids, is bouncing before him merrily. A living memory, only altered the slightest bit by the gleeful blue eyes staring up at him. A baker’s daughter…

“Do you like my dress?” She asks when she realizes she finally has his undivided attention, twisting in place to better show it off.

Peeta kneels down, hiding the pained wince from his daughter’s ever watchful gaze. “Oh sweetie, I love your dress.”

Her grin in response makes his heart flutter. Only one other girl has ever had this effect on him.

“Mama said you would.”

Peeta glances past his daughter then, gaze falling on said mama. She’s watching him knowingly, the ghost of a smirk playing at her lips.

“Of course she did.”

“She said all the boys would love it.”

He blinks at the remark, staring incredulously as the smirk on Katniss’ face grows more pronounced. Peeta returns his attention to his little girl to find her watching him expectantly.

“I’m sure everyone will love it.” He tries not to let any of the sudden anxiety he is feeling slip into his tone. It seems to work because his daughter giggles, dancing away from him and back to her mother. Katniss holds open the front door to the bakery, the cheery bell hanging over it ringing, and tells their little girl to play outside for a few moments. That she’ll be taking her off for her first day of school soon.

Peeta stands and waits until it is just the two of them.

“All the boys?!” He asks, the incredulity from before hanging off the three simple words.

She shrugs with faux nonchalance. “I’ve heard that look draws attention…”

“She’s five, Katniss.”

Mischief sparkles in those grey eyes. “Yeah, well…you never know what effect five year olds can have… And if history’s anything to go on…” With that, she slides out the door.

Peeta is left standing alone, thinking how little girls in red plaid dresses and two braids will really be the end of him one day.

It'd been twenty years since she'd first held her little girl, a clone made without her knowledge on an outlying world.

Ellie had been a tiny thing, all of six pounds, wrapped in a blanket and offered to her as a gift of their loyalty to Atlantis and her people, and God, but Elizabeth had been terrified that day: terrified at the reality of how Ellie had come to be, terrified at the thought of bringing her back to Atlantis where deadly pathogens and firefights were not uncommon, terrified at the thought of leaving her behind.

Terrified at the thought of suddenly having the one thing she'd been sure she'd never have.

“Uncle Carson had to teach me how to hold you,” she murmured.

Ellie rubbed one hand over the swell of her belly and thought that over—she'd been raised with Maddie, Torren, Aylee, Bradley, Robbie, and the rest of the so-called Munchkin guild, and her mother had never seemed uncomfortable or out of place. “Really?”

“Him and Papa, yes. They had to teach me how to hold you, how to change you, how to make a bottle... It was quite the crash course.”

“You got it down though.”

“I did,” she took a sip of her tea, setting the cup back down as she admitted, “I made plenty of mistakes though and Aunt Teyla had to have a lot of talks with me about being kinder to myself because you were happy and healthy and that's all that mattered. I was so convinced I had to be a perfect parent.”

“Is there such a thing?”

“Maybe existentially.”

That got Ellie to smile. “So there's hope for me and John then.”

Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve & Grace, Grace sees Steve like a second dad.

Daddy Dearest, Steve/Danny + Grace, PG

Date: 2012-04-05 04:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yehwellwhatever.livejournal.com
The first time Grace says 'Papa Steve' about Steve, it's a surprise to exactly no one. Except for Steve himself, whose jaw literally drops to the floor. Danny thinks for a second that Steve might faint. By the look Grace gives first Steve and then Danny and then back to Steve, his daughter has a similar thought.

“Danno, is Papa Steve okay?” Grace asks, voice hesitant and eyes wide with an emotion Danny can't quite place.

Danny shoots Steve a look as he crouches down in front of Grace. “I think he's in shock, monkey, he's gonna be fine in a moment.”

Grace looks over at Steve with a dubious frown. “Are you sure? Maybe we should call his doctor?”

“You know what, if you give him a hug, I'm sure he'll be back to normal in no time.” Danny doesn't believe it himself, but Grace's frown turns to a grin and she nods before she takes the few steps over to where Steve had collapsed on the kitchen chair as soon as the words had fallen over Grace's lips.

Danny watches as Grace stands a foot away from Steve for a full minute before she looks over her shoulder at him. He just nods again that she should hug Steve.

The moment Grace's arms goes around Steve's middle, it's as if the spell that had gotten to Steve is broken. His arms goes around Grace's shoulders and he pulls her so close that she looks squished against his chest.

When Steve looks up, his eyes are suspiciously shiny and it breaks Danny's heart a little that his partner is so clueless. “Did she just--?” Steve asks, his voice breaking. When Danny just smiles, the grin that he gets from Steve in return is huge. “She did.”

There's a muffled squeak coming from Grace as Steve's arms goes even tighter around her. Steve's arms drops to his side as if he's been burned. When Grace speaks, Danny doesn't have to see her face to know how happy she is. “Can we have pizza now?”

Supernatural, Dean/Castiel + Ben, when Lisa dies, Dean and Cas take Ben in

fill, part 1/3

Date: 2012-04-06 10:29 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shi-mo.livejournal.com
A/N: AU as far as ending of Swan Song goes. FYI, I sidestepped few legal issues, let’s just say Cas has phenomenal cosmic powers and be done with that, OK? :)

By the time he makes it from South Dakota to Cicero – Lisa is dead. Wild dog they say, Dean knows better. He cons his way in, as usual, only now he isn’t FBI or cop or animal control. He is Ben’s father.
It’s no coincidence and of course it’s all Dean’s fault. Lightning strikes twice when there are Winchesters involved after all. Dean sure it’s a revenge for stuffing Lucifer or his dick of older brother where they belong. And Dean knows that whoever did will pay, but first thing first. When finally coroner leaves him in the morgue alone with Lisa it’s close to midnight and Dean dials a number he didn’t think he would call anytime soon.
- I’m busy, Dean.
- I don’t care, - he says and tells Cas where he is.
There is a gruffly sigh on the other end of the line.
- I’ll be there.
When in a flutter of wings Castile appears in the middle of the morgue, he looks a bit pissed.
- What? – He snaps, closing his phone, but then his gaze lands on mutilated body under white sheet. – You hunt. Again. – There is a disproving note in angel’s voice.
- Not by choice. Look closer.
Dean sees understanding and guilt on his friend’s face and for some reason it makes Dean so much angrier.
- That’s right. My reward, you son of a bitch! No piece, no justice, just a backload of the same crap!
- I’m sorry.
- Bring her back, – it wasn’t supposed to be an order, but that what comes out of Dean’s mouth.
Cas looks around.
- Lisa Braeden’s soul is not on Earth anymore.
Dean swears.
- Then go bring it here.
Only when a second later Cas disappears like a good little soldier, Dean stops to think that he was maybe a bit rough with the guy.

***

It’s early morning and Dean just crashed on Liza’s couch when Cas comes back. He looks uneasy.
- Cas? – croaks Dean.
- I talked with a reaper, her soul went up.
- Peachy. And what’s the problem?
- I wasn’t able to find her in Heaven.
Before Dean says anything, Castiel steps closer.
- I will look again, - he promises.
- You do that, - tells Dean to empty air.

***

Cas is gone longer this time, Dean sees him only on the seventh day after funeral. He comes back ruffled up and there is a sooth on his trench coat.
- It might take some time, - he says taking a sit behind the kitchen counter.
Dean swears.
- Mum isn’t coming back, is she? – asks Ben.
- Of course she is, buddy.
- They say she won’t.
- Ben, look at me. Your mum is coming back, I promise. Because, Castiel here is an angel.
- I am an archangel now.
- Even better. And he will bring your mum back.
- You will?
Castiel nods solemnly.
- Yes.

Supernatural, Wee!Chesters and John, Dean never bothers to learn in schools; John overhears Sam trying to help him get better at reading/writing/math.
From: [identity profile] nevcolleil.livejournal.com
John knows that Dean doesn't do much in school. He knows that, typically, it would be his job, as the boys' father, to say something about it...

But how can he bring himself to care about Dean's Algebra grades when he's just trying to keep his kids alive most of the time? How can he give Dean a hard time about excelling in a school John is probably going to be pulling him out of soon enough? That Dean sometimes doesn't make it to on time, if at all on some days, because he was up late watching Sammy while John was out the night before, or helping patch John up after a rough hunt.

Dean's smart, no matter what his report cards say. Smarts like Dean's are hard to miss in the world of hunting. Dean's probably smarter than John, in fact, and that's all that John is worried about.

So he doesn't raise a fuss whenever Dean's told he has to retake Chemistry. Or his English teacher sends home an essay covered in scathing remarks. When he overhears Sammy helping Dean with his homework, using werewolves and skinwalkers in his explanation of quadratic triangles, John just smiles, a little sad but a lot proud. And when Sam tries to lecture Dean on the Lost Generation and Dean shocks him into silence by being a Hemingway fan ("What? I read.) John laughs out loud.

Gurk. I-it turned out sad.

Jim knows that Bones has the date of his daughter's arrival set so many times in his PADD. It's a reminder of the impeding divorce trial-whatever-it-is-it-isn't-fair, and it lays over Bones's head like a guillotine that this is the last chance to possibly patch things up with his wife, and then possibly the last time he'll ever see his daughter.

When Bones had asked him this favour, all hesitant and grouchy and I'm-trying-to-be-tough guy, Jim had said yes without hesitating. Like Jim could be an asshole and tell him no. As far as Jim was concerned, Bones was one of the few people he'd leap onto a shuttle heading for the sun for. It was rare, too, that Bones would ask something this personal for him. Plus, Bones being so vulnerable was the farthest thing from what Jim could ever want.

So right now, while Bones is trying to make that dinner with Joceyln work, Jim is in charge of Joanna. Or should he say, Joanna is in charge of Jim.

Joanna McCoy is a thing to be feared. She's tiny, small, and she clutches a lion to her chest that's so lopsided it's ridiculous. It wouldn't have been a lion had it not been for the mane. Bones made it for her a few years back, and if it's not something Jim will understand as one of the few things Joanna will ever have left of her father that'll bring home warm memories, then he doesn't know what is. Also, Joanna McCoy is pretty demanding.

Right off the bat, she asks him what his intentions are to her Daddy. Jim can respect the need to protect your family like any other guy, but it's a concept that's utterly foreign to him. Sure, he could probably be very secure in that he'd beat the ever-loving crap out of anyone who wronged Bones, but with family, it's different. It's strange to see a side of unconditional love.

"Intentions?" he blinks. "Aren't you a little too old for your mind to be in the gutter?"

She scowls up at him, and Jim ends up having to reassure her that he means well and that Bones is his best friend ever, stress on the best friend and the ever. Stress on everything. She doesn't seem convinced, but she wanders around the apartment Jim and Bones share (because Academy dorms sucked, and obviously if Bones wanted a place of his own, Jim totally had to come along) with a critical eye and seems to approve.

They get to talking about some pretty complicated stuff beyond her current level of education. For a kid, Joanna is surprisingly pretty smart. But then again, if Bones is her father, Jim shouldn't have expected anything less.

Out of the blue, Joanna stops.

"Mommy, Daddy, and I. We're not going to be together any more, are we?"

She's staring at him resolutely. She's not scared, but he can see it in her eyes that she knows that something is up with her Mommy and Daddy, and she's not stupid. Even if Bones and Jocelyn have tried their hardest to keep it from her, it's always the kid who notices first. And it's always the kid who gets the short end of the stick.

Anxiously his mind thinks back to the dinner Bones is having. He's pretty sure it's not going to do well, even if all he's ever wanted to do is to be optimistic about it--he's met Jocelyn, didn't like her. But Joanna loves her mother, just as she loves her father, and Jim can't say anything to that.

It'd be awesome if Jim could lie to her. Jim's lied before. To other people, to everything. But he can't. He can't say it's going to be alright, he can't say that everything will turn out fine.

"I'm sorry," He murmurs. And he is.

Joanna stares almost sadly up at him, and Jim can't help but feel like instead of being assessing, all she wants is everything to be all right again.

"I wish Daddy could have been with you instead." she says, and Jim starts.

She knows.

However, all Joanna does is look at him, and then hold out her arms. It's something she needs, and maybe, Jim thinks, he needs as well.

They don't let go of each other even when Bones comes back, and Jim can tell there is no hope at all.

Joanna is already fast asleep, but her fingers ultimately and instinctively curl tightly around her father's sleeve and Jim's sleeve won't let go--and perhaps that is the greatest reassurance she can give to her father and the man in love with him.

For a moment Ron blames Hermione; the anti-muggleborn prejudice that some of his older family members used to spew at weddings and funerals and other get-togethers swimming through his mind.

Then he gets a hold of himself, shakes his head to clear away the thoughts and guiltily goes to his wife, pressing a kiss to her forhead and murmuring over how perfect their daughter is.

She isn't perfect, not quite, but she's close enough that Ron can lock up his disappointment and hide it away in the back of his mind where he can pretend it doesn't exist.

There will be other children, he tellls himself. It's impossible for them all to be squibs.

Content with the thought of future magical children Ron takes his daughter into his arms and whispers a spell of protection over her. More than any of his other children she'll need it to survive in this big, bad, magical world.
