Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Faith, The law knew what he had done and let him off because of who he was. Faith knew this kind of bastard, because she'd suffered at the hands of once. They never stopped killing or raping until they were stopped, and she was just the ticket.

Mal’s Momma raised a righteous, God-fearing boy who always did the Christian thing. Sometimes Mal wonders what happened to him. He’d always expected to live his life with two feet firmly on the ground. He had been a sensible boy; he didn’t want riches or fame. He just wanted a patch of land for honest work and a moderately secure future.

Then that righteous, God-fearing, sensible boy had gone to war for a cause he’d believed was just like him. That’s probably where Mal had gone wrong – but it was wrong or death, and Mal was plenty feared of the latter. That was God’s territory, after all.

He learned to shoot and kill and whoop like a cattle rustler while he did it, and found someone who was exactly who she thought she would be. Later, he lost his morals and became a criminal. His feet rarely touch solid ground and his future is as unpredictable as River’s conniptions.

He also has a patch of land to call his own, even if it’s one that he carries with him all through the ‘verse, and security in the solidarity of the crew. So while Mal may not be right anymore, according to the way his parents raised him, he can’t quite convince himself he’s all that wrong either.

For as long as he could remember, he had a sense of right and wrong. Not moral, but transcendental one. Right was when things were in order and everything was well; wrong was when something was not as it should be and it kept nagging like an itch that never goes away.

With his powers of observation, it didn’t take him long to notice the disparity between reports on crimes committed and crimes solved. He double-checked to see if it’s merely papers not seeing fit to publish everything but no, the ratio of unsolved crime far outstripped the solved. Even with the solved ones, he thought, how can we be sure they are solved right? And wrong wrong wrong kept pounding in his head.

He saw no alternative but to try to make it right himself.
