He turned his back on the gang and stepped out into the sunlight to forge his own path, only to crash headlong into another first year.
"My apologies," he said and helped the other up.
"No need. My fault." A hand was offered. "I'm Potter."
"Prince," said Severus.
"And a fellow Griffendor. Off to lunch?"
"Yes."
"Well come on then," said the other with a grin. "I've some mates you should meet."

Date: 2014-07-08 02:10 pm (UTC)"I, uh." The wolf stammered his confusion.
"You just saved me! From him! And he's supposed to be here to protect me!"
The wolf had a hard time meeting Red's eyes. "It's just. I mean, I just." He tried not to whine. It was so unbecoming, especially with her looking like....that. "He wasn't himself."
"Neither are you. Do you still want to eat me?"
"Not now. Not as you are now." His mouth cracked wide into a grin as he panted his pleasure.
She looked down at herself. The one time she didn't dress normally, the one time she decided she was no longer a girl and could wear something that actually showed off the power and grace she was becoming as a woman, and that was the time the wolf got between her and the woodcutter. If she remembered rightly, the woodcutter had been far more aggressive than usual, and his smile had not been kind as much as it had been predatory. Red cocked her head and stared into the wolf's playful eyes. They were far more interesting than just being big. She realized just how powerful and dangerous he was, and how beautiful and noble.
"Thank you," she said.
"You are welcome," he replied, bowing as much as his aching body would allow.
They reviewed the mess that was left of the woodcutter.
"I will haul him away," said the wolf.
"Be sure and come back," said Red, and she softly passed her hand across the coarse fur on his shoulder.
The proud tail gently swayed with happiness. "I will," he said. "I will."

The mage-librarians worked in perfect, eerie silence, spells of suppression and compression dousing noise and magic more or less simultaneously, reducing an entire wing to strange, silent motion picture. It was almost beautiful, really, or would have been if it hadn't also been so bloody creepy.
"Well," said the professor, philosophically. "It could have been worse, I suppose."
Karl blinked at her. "Worse?" he exclaimed, and then clapped a hand over his mouth as the noise, compared to the deadness around them, assaulted his own ears. She raised an eyebrow, and after a second he managed to tone the volume down to a hiss in order to continue. "... How could this have been worse? There's six students dead and two more ... two more ..."
"Melted," she finished, helpfully. "Well, technically dissolved into solution, the magic was probably aiming for primordial soup and didn't quite have the components, but 'melted' probably covers it, I think."
Karl swallowed. "You think," he echoed faintly. "Yes. And this is ... this doesn't count as 'worse', to you?"
She paused, turning fully towards him with the oddest expression. A weird, creepy half-smile thing, her eyes over her spectacles like little amber chips of malice. Karl took a step back, a movement entirely driven by his hindbrain, which abruptly did not like Professor Tessaraeus at all and wanted quite fervently to be at least a burning building away from her.
"I did tell you not to speak in front of the books," she said, with arid sweetness. "Latin wasn't your best choice, since you managed to set off a series of partial spells simultaneously, but no, it wasn't your worst either." She smiled that half-smile again, gesturing over to nearby section of the library. "Given that Incantations borders on both Necromancy and Demonology, for ease of access, you understand, there are several wonderful options you could have stumbled across. Accidental summoning is ever so riveting an endeavour, don't you think?"
She draped a friendly arm around his shoulders, steering him over to peer down the high, stooped shelves of the Demonology section, cheerfully ignoring his rigid stance and squeak of terror.
"In this direction, you might have had better luck with Arabic. We have a nice, responsive copy of the Kitab Al-Azif down here." She glanced at him, smiled "That's the Necronomicon, to you. Or, since you seem fond of wyld magic, or at least the nearest possible substitute, a little German might help you unlock Der Lied der Erlkönig, for interesting fae-related shenanigans. Latin, of course, will net you the Liber Ivonis. Even English will do in a pinch, we've several translations of the Keys of Solomon that work well for the monolingual mage on a budget. And over here ..."

Date: 2014-07-05 06:18 pm (UTC)The Little Mermaid, AU, dark and creepy
Date: 2014-07-07 06:38 pm (UTC)(I'm not at all sure if this anything like what you wanted. It takes place after a dark AU for Disney's Little Mermaid/the original story (i'm not even sure, to be honest))
After... after everything, she swims down into the deep, trailing the blood of Atlantis behind her, and she ignores the monstrous creatures that dart at her, she ignores the taste of the darkest water, and she swims and swims and swims down down down, until at last she reaches the bottom.
She can barely breathe, here. Cannot see. It is dark and quiet, but she grasps at the bare dirt at the bottom of the ocean and she sings with what remains of her strength.
She sags as the last note leaves her throat, and as she starts to rise, the currents catching her without the force left to struggle, she hears a faint laugh. Her last thought is only Thank you, and then she is gone.
But there are things that sleep in the deep. Things that need only a reason to wake, a summoning, a call through the vast water, a plea in the dark. The last daughter of Atlantis is fodder for the bottom feeders, but her vengeance stirs. It rises.
The Sea Witch would smile, had she survived -- but none are left. She would cackle to see what Triton’s child has woken.
It rises from the deep, through the dark, to the surface, stretching for the first time in living memory.
It rises, hungry.

Date: 2014-07-06 12:15 am (UTC)Loki had taken Clint and taken the free will that had always been his trademark, the one thing that hard living and almost dying and killing too many souls had never taken from him, the one thing he'd offered to Natasha that had the power to bring her in to SHIELD in the first place.
It was unforgivable and unacceptable. Regimes fell every day and Natasha wasn't actually all that interested in avenging the earth if it fell, just one man: Clint.
So she put off her stealth and her espionage mindset and kept the deadliness of her namesake. She became a soldier. She waded into war. She took her vengeance and became an Avenger.
