Date: 2014-07-14 04:41 pm (UTC)Murphy put down the fire extinguisher and laughed at me. Laughed. “I think you did. You said you had something special to show me, something that I would like, something sparkly. This is the Fourth of July, Dresden. I assumed it was some kind of cute incendiary device until you removed that blasting rod from your pocket.”
“It’s not a blasting rod.”
“No?” Her little blonde eyebrows rose with disbelief.
I pitched the long, flat box so it would land at her feet.
“You said sparkly. This isn’t sparkly.” She bent down to pick it up, not a far reach for her. “What is this?” She opened it and frowned at the contents. Then she transferred that frown to me.
“I thought, since we were actually having dinner together, that I could assume it was a date and bring something appropriate. If you don’t like it, I can take it apart and try again.”
She lifted a dainty but deadly finger and on it hung the small charm bracelet I had made from intricate circles of shiny silver wire. Murphy didn’t need to know I had enchanted every loop with some sort of protective spell, only that it was pretty. She would have punched me if she thought I was protecting her from those who would use any female interest of the Winter Knight as a hostage, so I had to be careful.
Something far brighter than the silver lit her eyes. “You made this? For me?”
“Too girly?” I asked as I tried to dust off the rest of the fire extinguisher residue from out of my dark hair and off my duster. “Gah. I probably look like Gandalf or something.”
She knocked me to the floor, which was quite a feat considering I’m supposed to be some sort of tall wizard thug and she’s just a plain short human female. Of course she does have all those black belts and I’ve only got a big staff.
She straddled me and sat down hard on my diaphragm. “Yes! Yes! I made it for you,” I choked out. “I just thought.”
My mouth was quickly covered by hers and I lost myself in the warmth of her touch and the passion of her heart. I could have sworn I heard fireworks, too, but that might have been my imagination.

Date: 2014-07-14 05:07 pm (UTC)I now have the most recent Dresden book waiting for me to start reading it. I should do that, since I'm home feeling yucky.
...I'm afraid I won't like it as much as this, though.
