Not related to the above, but I think this prompt really suits Mulan, but, alas, her story isn't what one would normally consider a fairy tale. . . .

The Price of Being a Princess (Original)
Date: 2017-04-01 12:16 am (UTC)She may have the finest luxuries in all the kingdom since birth, but it came at a high price: freedom. No, she wasn't a princess locked away in a tower by a dragon, witch, or evil queen, but being born into royalty meant a plethora of demands and social obligations, many of which she didn't care for. Perhaps, if she were born male, she'd be more enthusiastic about her role; after all, her younger brother—a prince, obviously—got to do a lot of cool things: archery, horseback riding, hunting, jousting, etc.
But what she was jealous about, most of all, was that he got a real education, the comprehensive and all-encompassing kind that enlightened, the kind that widened one's horizons and expanded one's world, the kind that really mattered. Reading, writing, and arithmetic were much more practical and worthwhile skills than proper etiquette and dancing (although her brother had those as well). History, philosophy, literature and music, on the other hand, while not obviously practical, held an air of magic and mystery over her.
It utterly frustrated her that she was denied all these things, simply by virtue of being born female. Her younger brother was being groomed to be a king, while she, the older sister, was being groomed to be someone's queen—and a complete stranger at that. It didn't matter what her place in society was, in the end, she was to live the destiny of so many other women like her, no matter the social class: to be ultimately subservient to the male.
